At the Meeting of States parties, elections may be held to replace members at the end of their term, or to elect new members due to resignation or death. Each State party may nominate one person from its own nationals to stand for election at a meeting of States parties.

States parties cast their votes by secret ballot from a list of nominees, with due consideration being given to the geographical distribution, relevant legal experience and gender representation of the candidates. Members are elected for a term of four years and are eligible for re-election once.
