During its 79th session, was held online from 21 June to 1 July 2021, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women held a virtual day of general discussion on the rights of indigenous women and girls, organized by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The purpose of the day of general discussion was to stimulate debate and seek inputs for the elaboration by the Committee of a General Recommendation on the rights of indigenous women and girls. The aim of the General Recommendation was to provide guidance to States parties to the Convention on the measures they should adopt to ensure full compliance with their obligations under the Convention to respect and protect the rights of indigenous women and girls.
Date, venue and themes
The general discussion was held online on Thursday, 24 June 2021 from 12h30 to 14h30 and from 16h00 to 18h00 (Geneva time) to accommodate different time zones. It was divided into two thematic segments as follows:
- 12h30 to 14h30 - Part 1: “Equality and non-discrimination with a focus on indigenous women and girls and intersecting forms of discrimination”
- 16h00 to 18h00 - Part 2: “Effective participation, consultation and consent of indigenous women and girls in political and public life”
Participation
The Committee invited States parties to the CEDAW Convention, United Nations entities and specialized agencies, other human rights mechanisms, international and regional intergovernmental organizations, national human rights institutions, non-governmental organizations, academics and other interested stakeholders to participate in the general discussion and provide written submissions.
