Bertrand Ramcharan, United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, currently performing the functions of High Commissioner for Human Rights, said today the indictment by the Special Prosecutor of the Special Court for Sierra Leone of Charles Taylor for war crimes, crimes against humanity and serious violations of international humanitarian law is highly significant. Having regard to the principles of international human rights law, the emphasis of the international community on justice and against impunity, and taking into account the aspirations of the peoples of Sierra Leone and Liberia for peace and reconciliation, Mr. Ramcharan appeals to all concerned, particularly the leadership in Liberia, to act with wisdom to uphold international human rights and humanitarian law. Mr. Ramcharan expressed solidarity with the Special Prosecutor and support for the Special Court.
