背景

Somali is the national language of Somalia, in easternmost Africa. It is spoken by the majority of the population (over 9 million people), as well as several million speakers in Ethiopia, and about 300,000 in Kenya. Somali is one of the Cushitic languages, which form a branch of the Afro-Asiatic (Hamito-Semitic) family. In 1973 it was made the official language of Somalia. In Somalia it is the official language together with Arabic. Standard Somali, based on Northern Somali, is used in primary education. The government adopted the Latin script in 1972, abandoning the Osmania script.
