It is spoken in the northern part of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, and in some communities in the states of Puebla and Veracruz.

背景

It is spoken by nearly 200,000 people, including all varieties of Mazateco, out of which several thousands are monolinguals. Varieties of Mazateco are inherently intelligible, also with other languages. In some rural areas children do not know Spanish when entering school. The language belongs to the Oto-Manguean family.
