It belongs to the Benue-Congo family, Bantu group, and is spoken by over 8 million people especially in former Zaire, and as many as 15 million people including second language users. Originally Lingala was spoken around the confluence of the rivers Oubangui and Congo, but today's Lingala is a mixed language containing elements from several Bantu languages as well as French, Portuguese and English. In fact, it is the main lingua franca of the northern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
