Home Speakers: Bali (Indonesia)

背景

It belongs to the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) family, Indonesian group and is spoken by nearly 4 million people, especially in Bali. Like Javanese, it is a multi-level language, where the level spoken is in direct relationship to the social status or politeness required between the individual speakers. Its roots go back to Javanese, Kawi and Sanskrit, since many Javanese Hindus fled to Bali when Islam began to take hold in Java. Both Balinese and Latin scripts are used.
