背景

There are 100,000 first language speakers, and 450,000 second language speakers who are able to speak or understand Asturian. Central Asturian is considered the model, and has the most speakers. Asturian speakers use Spanish in formal situations and with outsiders. Educational establishments in primary and secondary education are obliged to offer the language as part of their curriculum; the language is an option offered to the students. There exists Asturian literature, both popular and literary.
