Gender Stereotyping and the Judiciary: A Workshop Guide
OHCHR has developed new training materials on gender stereotyping: Gender Stereotyping and the Judiciary: A Workshop Guide.
The Workshop Guide provides guidance on organizing and holding training courses, to raise awareness among judges at the national or regional level about the role of the judiciary in addressing wrongful gender stereotyping.
The publication includes a suggested programme and methodology, as well as a detailed outline for several sessions with presentation slides, notes and exercises that may be adapted to different contexts and needs.
The aims of the workshop are to increase the capacity of judges to identify and overcome gender stereotyping, in particular concerning cases related to gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive health and rights. This, in turn, allows for strengthening the protection of human rights and access to justice, particularly for women and other persons who are marginalized due to their sex, gender identity and/or sexual orientation.
The below accompanying presentation slides to the Workshop Guide may be used in developing training courses on eliminating judicial gender stereotyping. They may also be helpful as a general information resource on this subject, together with the following OHCHR studies, on which the Workshop Guide is based:
- Gender stereotyping as a human right violation (2013)
- Eliminating judicial stereotyping: Equal access to justice for women in gender-based violence cases (2014)
- Background paper on the role of the judiciary in addressing the harmful gender stereotypes related to sexual and reproductive health and rights1 A review of case law (2018)
