Background

Pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 33/25, during its inter-sessional meeting in 2019, the Expert Mechanism decided to prepare a report on self-determination under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of 2007. This will be the first substantive report post 2007 on the right to self-determination.

Expert Seminar and Draft Report

The Expert Mechanism accepted an invitation to hold a seminar in Treaty Six Territory on 4 and 5 February 2021, for the purpose of informing this report. A draft report will be introduced by the Expert Mechanism at its annual session, due to take place from 12 to 16 July 2021, after which it will be finalised and presented to the Human Rights Council at its forty-eighth session in September 2021.

The Expert Mechanism requested contributions from States, Indigenous Peoples, NHRIs and other stakeholders to the study.
