HANOI (28 November 2013) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on cultural rights, Farida Shaheed, will share with the media her preliminary observations and recommendations at the end of her first official mission to Viet Nam (18-29 November). During her twelve-day stay, she visited Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, and Sa Pa.

“I have met many actors, both at the governmental level and in civil society, and addressed issues that are particularly important for people here, such as those related to the expression of artistic freedoms and the impact of tourism on cultural rights,” Ms. Shaheed said.

“At the end of the day,” she stressed, “Vietnam needs to consider expanding the space for people to articulate their views and to ensure they can contribute their knowledge, including their traditional knowledge, to the development of the country.”

The Special Rapporteur’s end-of-mission press conference will take place on Friday 29 November, at 10:00 a.m., at the UNDP Rose conference room (25-29 Phan Boi Chau Street, Hanoi).
