  • World Congress on Juvenile Justice, includes the Global Study across its plenary and workshop sessions, and also explicitly supports the Study in its final outcome document.
  • Paulo Pinhiero, former Independent Expert for the United Nations Study on Violence (2006) sends official letter to United Nations Secretary General supporting the Global Study.
  • Six former chairpersons of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child make a public statement supporting the Study and requesting the appointment of an Independent Expert.

  • United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopts its Child Rights Resolution (A/RES/69/157) inviting the commission of an in-depth global study on children deprived of liberty (§ 52.d).

  • Official letter of the NGO Panel addresses the United Nations Secretary General to urge the appointment of an Independent Expert to lead the Study;
  • United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Professor Juan Mendez makes an official statement endorsing the Study.

  • Expert Consultation takes place in Geneva, Switzerland, organized by the NGO Panel, involving UN experts and agencies, member States, academia and civil society.

  • The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child supports the Global Study through an official letter of recommendation addressed to the United Nations Secretary General.

  • Defence for Children International (DCI), Human Rights Watch (HRW) and other NGOs officially launch the campaign calling for a Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland on the Annual Day on the Rights of the Child of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
  • In addition, the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC) formally supports the Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty through an official statement.
