The report focuses on the essential role that the Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary have played as guarantors of judicial independence, and on the current threats and challenges to the independence of judiciary.

Summary

34 years since the adoption of the Basic Principles, further progress is needed in order to address the challenges that the judiciary and individual judges face in the discharge if their essential functions.

The report identifies two issues that are not addressed in the original text of the Basic Principles and would deserve more attention: first, the threat of global and transnational corruption on the judiciary; and second, the need to integrate the Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct into the Basic Principles.
