The United Nations Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism, Ms. Ikponwosa Ero, will undertake an official country visit to South Africa from 16-26 September 2019, to examine questions related to the human rights of persons with albinism in the country.

In this context, the Independent Expert will be meeting with civil society organizations and individuals in Johannesburg on 20-21 September 2019. The meeting will assist in gathering information related to her mandate, which include:

  • Identification of the manifestations of violence against persons with albinism;
  • Key issues and challenges faced in the implementation of the international and regional legal framework on albinism and disabilities;
  • Good practices aimed at promoting the protection of the human rights of persons with albinism, including data collection initiatives, inclusive policies related to health provision and education, etc;
  • Any information related to the State’s fulfilment of its human rights obligations to protect the rights of persons with albinism;
  • Any other pertinent information that you consider to be relevant for the visit of the Independent Expert.
