Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights
The Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Mr. Olivier De Schutter, has launched a 2–minute animation video, “Speaking of poverty, differently”. The video poses questions about the stereotyped perception of poverty and underlines that we need to see poverty as a failure of society, rather than that of the individual. It calls for creating a truly inclusive economy in which each person is considered an active actor co-constructing solutions, rather than a passive recipient of support. The Special Rapporteur on the environment elevates awareness on air pollution and human rights
The Special Rapporteur on the environment's recent thematic report on air pollution and human rights, which was presented to the 40th session of the Human Rights Council in March 2019 (A/HRC/40/55), contributed to elevating the profile of this issue, which is causing over seven million premature deaths per year, including 600,000 children aged five or under. The report received extensive media attention around the world and many States commented that they appreciated the practical and concrete nature of the Special Rapporteur's recommendations.
The Independent Expert on international order highlights "regulatory chill" generated by Investor-State-Dispute-Settlement (ISDS) arbitration mechanisms
Beginning in 2015, the former Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order addressed the adverse effects of international free trade and investment agreements on a democratic and equitable international order. He issued a number of press releases, published legal articles and presented reports to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly on these issues, which have generated an increasing interest from the press. Most notably, his efforts in raising concern about the aggravation of the "regulatory chill" generated by Investor-State-Dispute-Settlement (ISDS) arbitration mechanisms have contributed mainstreaming the issue into the media, which is now increasingly reporting on the human rights impact of a number of international multilateral treaties currently under negotiation, such as the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) or the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
