Background

As the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is being commemorated this year, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recalls that in article 2 “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms without distinction of any kind, including race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”

The Durban Declaration and Programme of Action identifies manifestations of, as well as victims impacted by, racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance. In several countries of the MENA region, discrimination and racism affect people’s daily lives, including access to justice, health care, adequate housing, education and employment, and can exclude people from public life and subject them to a life of inequality and poverty.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will organize a 4-day workshop in Beirut, Lebanon on equality and anti-discrimination in the MENA region. The workshop objectives are:

  • to inform and raise participants awareness about the international human rights instruments and mechanisms mandated to address racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
  • to engage participants on the role of civil society and other stakeholders in addressing racism and discrimination in assisting to develop laws, policies and strategies, and in taking measures and action against such forms of discrimination;
  • to introduce participants to tools to strengthen their capacity to promote and protect human rights victims of racism and discrimination, including people of African descent on issues related to equality and decent work and living conditions in the context of migration;
  • to share good practices, challenges and knowledge about actions and policies to combat racism and racial discrimination in the respective countries of the region.

Selection criteria

OHCHR invites interested applicants from the region to apply. The workshop is open to participants representing civil society organizations, academics, and United Nations Country Teams (UNCT) present in the MENA region and working to address issues of racism, discrimination and equality. Selection decision will be made by OHCHR considering the following:

  • Relevance of the area of work
  • Regional representation
  • Gender balance
  • Knowledge of Arabic or English
  • Present in the MENA region countries or working on the relevant workshop issues in the region
  • Commitment of the participant to convey key elements of the workshop in their respective area of work.

The selected candidates are entitled to a return flight ticket, accommodation, and daily allowance for the period of the workshop.
