International standards on racial justice and equality

OHCHR and racism

Freedom from discrimination of all kinds is enshrined in Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a principle of both the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination addresses it directly.

Since the passing of these core instruments, UN Human Rights has worked to develop of a host of related standards. It is also evaluating the need for complementary standards to reinforce the Convention.
