UN Committee on Migrant Workers to review Nicaragua

GENEVA (26 August  2016) – The record of Nicaragua on protecting the rights of migrant workers is due to be reviewed by the UN Committee on the Rights of Migrant Workers (CMW) on 31 August and 1 September in Geneva. Nicaragua is one of the 48 States Parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families, and so is required to be reviewed regularly by the Committee. 

Among the possible issues to be raised during the discussion between the CMW and a delegation from the Nicaraguan Government are:

·    Government ministry or institution responsible for implementation of the Convention;
·    Role of the Office of the Ombudsman for Human Rights on migration issues, including visits to migrant detention centres;
·    Services and support provided by Nicaraguan consular services to help and protect Nicaraguan workers and their families abroad, in particular when such  workers are detained and forcibly returned to Nicaragua;
·    Measures taken to prevent irregular migration of Nicaraguans, including information campaigns about the dangers of irregular migration;
·    Measures to detect and eradicate human trafficking and smuggling, and support provided for victims.

The discussions are due to take place at Palais Wilson in Geneva on 30 August from 15:00-18:00 (7:00-10:00 in Managua) and on 1 September from 10:00-13:00 (2:00-5:00 in Managua), and will be webcast live at http://webtv.un.org/. The Committee will also be briefed by representatives of NGOs, UN bodies and specialised agencies.
