UN Deputy High Commissioner for human rights to visit Colombia

26 November 2009

GENEVA -- The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Kyung-wha Kang is to pay her first visit to Colombia from 28 November to 4 December, where she will participate in the High Level Segment of the Second Review Conference of the State Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (Ottawa Convention), to be held in Cartagena on 3 December.

"We have focused our attention on ensuring that any action with respect to landmines is centered on victims, particularly on those groups in specially vulnerable situations, such as children, women, and indigenous and rural populations," said Ms. Kang.

The Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights will arrive in Bogotá on Saturday 28 November, and will fly on Sunday to the southeastern department of Putumayo, on the border with Ecuador and Peru, where she will observe first-hand the impact of landmines on the civilian population.

From Monday 30 November to Wednesday 2 December Ms. Kang will hold meetings in Bogotá with senior Colombian officials to discuss the human rights situation in the country and to foster cooperation in the next two years. The Deputy High Commissioner will also meet with representatives of the UN system, the diplomatic corps and civil society organizations.
