The High Commissioner for Human Rights was pleased to learn of the Nobel Committee’s announcement today that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 has been awarded to Jimmy Carter.

The High Commissioner welcomes this decision, saying that it “gives due recognition to Jimmy Carter’s tireless efforts in pursuit of peaceful solutions to conflict with human rights at their core.

I have had the privilege of seeing first hand, most recently in East Timor, Jimmy Carter’s commitment to assisting in the development of democratic institutions on the basis of full respect for human rights.”

The High Commissioner also commends his adoption of an inclusive approach in this regard, which takes into account the interdependence and indivisibility of all human rights - civil, cultural, economic, political and social – for all people.
