HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS CONDEMNS BOMB ATTACK IN TEL AVIV

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson condemned “in the strongest terms” the bombing attack late last night on a Tel Aviv nightclub.

“I learned with shock and horror of the killing of those 19 young people caught in the tragic cycle of violence consuming Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. Acts like this only fuel the hatred and polarization that is all too prevalent in the region and that make a peaceful resolution of the conflict even more remote. Such violence is to be condemned in the strongest terms and rejected by all”.

The High Commissioner urged the parties to exercise the utmost restraint and appealed for a cessation of all attacks against civilians.

“The right to life is the most basic human right of all”, she said. “Israeli and Palestinian civilians are not fully enjoying this right. I call on the leaders of the region to show the necessary political will and courage to bring the violence to an end”
