DARFUR INQUIRY COMMISSION ARRIVES IN SUDAN

The Chairperson of the International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur,
Antonio Cassese, issued the following statement today :

The International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur, established by the Secretary-General according to Security Council resolution 1564, arrived yesterday, 7 November, in Sudan.

The Commission plans to be in the country until 21 November and will meet with representatives of the Government, international agencies and civil society groups. The Commission will also travel to Darfur.

According to Security Council resolution 1564, the mandate of the Commission is to ‘investigate reports of violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law in Darfur by all parties, to determine also whether or not acts of genocide have occurred and to identify the perpetrators of such violations with a view to ensuring that the those responsible are held accountable.’

The Commission is an independent body. It is supported by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, which is providing the secretariat, legal research team, and investigative team.

Members of the Commission include Antonio Cassese (Chairperson), Mohammed Fayek, Hina Jilani, Dumisa Ntsebeza and Therese Striggner-Scott.
