Briefing notes on Kenya and Haiti

01 March 2013

Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Rupert Colville
Location: Geneva
Date: 1 March 2013

1) Kenya

We are deploying a human rights team for the elections taking place in Kenya on Monday (March 4).

The four-person team will monitor the human rights situation during the electoral period and will support the Kenyan National Commission of Human Rights as well civil society organisations.

2) Haiti

We welcome the beginning of the trial of Jean-Claude Duvalier yesterday in the Court of Appeal in Port-au-Prince, with him present in the court for the first time. This is an important step forward in Haiti.

MINUSTAH and OHCHR staff were present in court yesterday and will closely observe the remainder of the trial.
