Human Rights, Gender and Corruption - Linkages, good practices, potential and limitations (at UNCAC)

At the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Abu Dhabi, participants shared good practices and their views on the potential and limitations of mainstreaming the anti-corruption and human rights agendas. They discussed awareness of the negative impact of corruption on the enjoyment of human rights and the consequent need to undertake effective anti-corruption measures.

The panel discussion was a vibrant, interesting and rich debate, and addressed corruption from petty corruption at the grassroots level to corruption on a grand scale at the transnational level. There was a consensus that a strong link existed between anti-corruption efforts and human rights, and it was hoped that those efforts could thus receive the sustained attention of the Human Rights Council. The panellists concluded that efforts to combat corruption were most effective and sustainable when coupled with an approach that respected all human rights and put people at the centre. Efforts to fight corruption and to ensure human rights must therefore go hand in hand.
United Nations Conference on anti-corruption measures, good governance and human rights

With more than 240 participants from 102 Member and Observer States, the Conference identified concrete ways in which governance efforts to fight corruption are assisted by and contribute to human rights protection. The Conference built on the increasing awareness within the international community about the detrimental impact of widespread corruption on human rights both through the weakening of institutions and the erosion of public trust in government as well as through impairing the ability of governments to fulfil human rights.
