Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The ninth session of the Conference of the States parties to the Convention was held in New York from 14 to 16 June 2016. The election of nine members of the Committee took place on 14 June 2016.

Gender balance and geographical representation

In its composition at the time of the election, six experts of the Committee were women, and 12 were men. Their geographical distribution was as follows: three experts from Latin America and the Caribbean, three from Africa, three from Eastern Europe, four from Asia-Pacific, and five from Western Europe and other States group.

Of the nine experts whose mandates were set to expire on 31 December 2016, five experts were women and four were men; two were from Latin America and Caribbean, one from Africa, one from Eastern Europe, two from Asia-Pacific, and three from Western Europe and other States Group.

Given the fact that the term of office of five out of six women members of the Committee expire on 31 December 2016, States parties to the Convention were strongly encouraged to consider Article 34.4, which calls for balanced gender representation in the membership of the Committee.
