UN Human Rights Report to the Secretary-General on implementation of the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy

Published

22 June 2023

The UN Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS), adopted by the Secretary General in 2019, provides the foundation for sustainable and transformative progress on disability inclusion through all pillars of the work of the United Nations: peace and security, human rights, and development.

The Strategy enables the UN system to support the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other international human rights instruments, as well as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Agenda for Humanity and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Following the Human Rights Council’s resolution 49/12, UN Human Rights now reports on its performance under the UNDIS to the Human Rights Council.
Building on the third report, our Office worked to improve its performance under the UNDIS entity-based accountability framework. As reported in 2023, UN Human Rights made progress on one out of the 15 applicable indicators:

  • #9 Programmes and Projects from missing to approaches requirements.

UN Human Rights maintained all other ratings as per previous reporting. For more information on OHCHR’s 2023 reporting: PDF form - Easy to read version in English (Word).

We continue to be strongly committed to the rights of persons with disabilities. In 2022, we updated OHCHR’s Annual Action Plan to continue to improve in the implementation of the indicators and in 2023 we updated OHCHR policy on disability rights. The policy and the action plan are an integral part of UNDIS implementation.
