Cultural rights

Summary

The purpose of the visit was to understand, in a spirit of cooperation and constructive dialogue, how the Government endeavours to implement cultural rights and identify good practices in, and possible obstacles to, the promotion and protection of cultural rights in Tuvalu. The Special Rapporteur addressed, in particular, issues related to everyone’s rights, without discrimination, to participate in cultural life, to access and enjoy public spaces and to participate in the development and implementation of policies that have an impact on the exercise of cultural rights. She also addressed the challenges raised by the impacts of the climate emergency, especially on cultural heritage and the continuity of ways of life, and the opportunities that the exercise of cultural rights might afford in finding means of facing those challenges, including in the light of the Sustainable Development Goals.
