Summary
In her report, the Special Rapporteur on the sale, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children, Mama Fatima Singhateh, explores issues relating to the sale, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children in Uruguay, in the light of international human rights norms and standards. On the basis of the information gathered prior to, during and after her visit, conducted from 16 to 26 May 2023, she highlights legislative initiatives, the institutional framework and child protection policies implemented to combat and prevent the phenomena, as well as measures taken to care for and ensure the recovery and reintegration of child victims. She makes recommendations to strengthen efforts to prevent and eradicate the sale, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children.
At the invitation of the Government of Uruguay, the Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children, including child prostitution, child pornography and other child sexual abuse material, Ms. Mama Fatima Singhateh, will conduct an official visit to the country from 16 to 26 May 2023, to assess the situation and the progress made in combating and preventing the sale and sexual exploitation of children in the light of international human rights norms and standards.
In preparation for the visit, the Special Rapporteur invites all interested individuals and organizations, including civil society organizations, academics and children to provide inputs on:
All inputs will be treated confidentially by the Special Rapporteur and her team and for the sole purpose of preparing for the county visit.
Reports, academic studies and other types of background materials can be attached as an annex to the submission.
The Special Rapporteur greatly appreciates the effort that goes into making such contributions and looks forward to reading the submissions.
The Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference to share her preliminary findings with the media at the end of her visit. Additional information on the time, venue of the press conference and contact details will be shared prior to the visit.
