نائبة مفوضة الأمم المتحدة السامية لحقوق الإنسان تزور كمبوديا

24 نيسان/أبريل 2014

GENEVA / PHNOM PENH (24 April 2014) – The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Flavia Pansieri, will visit Cambodia from 28 April to 2 May 2014. Pansieri is the most senior UN human rights official to visit the country since 2010.

In Phnom Penh, the Deputy High Commissioner will meet with senior Government officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as well as with civil society representatives.

During her visit, Pansieri will review the human rights situation in Cambodia and the efforts underway to improve it, including with the assistance of the UN Human Rights Office in Cambodia.

The Deputy High Commissioner will also visit a prison, which benefits, together with other detention places in Cambodia, from OHCHR technical assistance, as well as a resettlement site hosting people who have been evicted from their lands.

The Deputy High Commissioner will hold a press conference at the end of her visit, on Friday, 2 May at 3 p.m. at the UN Human Rights Office, 10 Street 302, Boeng Keng Kang 1, in Phnom Penh.

In Cambodia, OHCHR implements programmes to support and help reform the prison system, strengthen the rule of law and the justice sector, promote land rights and livelihoods, protect the space for civil society and human rights defenders and to promote human rights education. The UN Human Rights office also implements its global human rights monitoring and protection mandate.

In February, OHCHR and the Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding extending the presence of the UN Human Rights Office in Cambodia until the end of 2015.

Established in 1993, Cambodia was in effect the first country to host a field presence of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, tracing its origins back to the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC).
