Membership

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is composed of 18 independent experts who are persons of high moral character and recognized competence in the field of human rights, who serve in their personal capacity.

Members are elected for a term of four years by States parties in accordance with article 8 of the Convention. Consideration is given to equitable geographical distribution, relevant legal experience, understanding of different forms of civilization and legal systems, and balanced gender representation.

Regular scheduled elections are held to replace members of the Committee when their terms expire. Elections for nine of the eighteen members are held every two years, ensuring a balance between continuity and change in the composition of the Committee. Members may be re-elected if nominated.
