World Leprosy Day
World Leprosy Day is observed internationally every year on the last Sunday of January to increase the public awareness of leprosy (also known as Hansen's Disease).
The Special Rapporteur issues public statements to mark World Leprosy Day as follows:
- 2021 statement: “From leprosy to COVID-19, we must eliminate double standards and put those furthest behind at centre of recovery”
- 29 January 2021 tweet:
To better fight against the #COVID19 pandemic, we should learn from the history of #leprosy. We need to eliminate discrimination, stigma and double standards for those who have been systematically left behind – @srleprosy 👉 https://t.co/00d8JjfqWO#WorldLeprosyDay#EndStigmapic.twitter.com/bTitL7pZ2c
