Keeping the peace – human rights on the ground

The UN Human Rights Office, through the work of its human rights officers on the ground, has contributed to peace efforts in countries in conflict. These officers look at the root causes of conflict and social inequalities; help bridge the divide between peace and security, development and humanitarian action; and ultimately, contribute to lasting peace and greater security for everyone.

Mamadou Bah and Christian Lumbala are two of our human rights officers working in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali. They are both based in Mopti Region in the centre of Mali, which is also part of the Sahel, a region burdened with insecurity.

“At our Mission we protect the civilian population, more specifically women and children. The greatest satisfaction I get out of my job is when I carry out advocacy work for people in need with the judicial authorities, and that these people benefit from it,” said Mamadou Bah.

“Our job is to be with the people. Even if we do not change everyone's lives, we bring joy to their hearts,” Christian Lumbala said.
