Human Rights highlighted at United Nations Open Day

14 September 2012

The United Nations will open its doors on Saturday, 15 September for a day filled with activities for families including puppet shows, films, concerts, computer games, and guided tours. The UN Human Rights Office will be participating in the United Nations Office at Geneva’s (UNOG) Open Day event, which will offer visitors the chance to explore the Palais des Nations and Ariana Park, while becoming more acquainted with the United Nations.

The Open Day event will celebrate the International Day of Democracy and will also raise awareness of the 2012 International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

“This is a unique opportunity for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to engage with our local community and introduce them to our work and human rights,” says UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay.

The Office’s activities will include a large stand featuring promotional material about the Office and human rights. A selection of videos produced by the Office will be presented in the cinema room and a video game on human rights will be offered in the game area. The Office will also host a puppet show on human rights at 15h30 and 16h45.

Visitors will be able to stroll through Ariana Park and the Palais des Nations, while participating in a host of activities sponsored by UN organizations and countries’ Permanent Missions to Geneva.

The event will be held at the Palais des Nations from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit the official Open Day website for more information. All visitors must be holding a valid identification document to enter the grounds.
