03 August 2012

The 52nd session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) took place from 9 July to 27 July 2012 at the United Nations in New York. The Committee reviewed and made recommendations on the situation of women in the Bahamas, Bulgaria, Guyana, Indonesia, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand and Samoa.

Representatives of interested NGOs were invited to participate. Joyce Hewett, board member and spokesperson of the Association of Women's Organisations of Jamaica (AWOJA), one of the participating NGOs, explains why the Convention and the work of the Committee are important to women in Jamaica.
