Message of the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons for the Third Global Dementia Legacy Event, 5-7 November 2014

14 November 2014

On the occasion of the Third Global Dementia Legacy Event in Japan, the first United Nations Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, Ms. Rosa Kornfeld-Matte, calls for concerted action to ensure that older persons suffering from dementia can fully enjoy their human rights in all circumstances. The Global Dementia Legacy Events are an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of adopting a human rights-based approach to protect the rights and dignity of older persons with dementia. Older persons are rights-holders and this perspective should be included in all discussions”.

“It is also important to improve prevention and care by ensuring early diagnosis, increasing investment in research and promote a broad approach of active ageing in order to optimize the participation and enhance the quality of life of all older persons.  Sharing best practices in these different areas could contribute to address the challenges faced by older persons with dementia around the world”.
