Statements Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS WELCOMES CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENTS IN BAHRAIN

15 February 2002

Geneva, 15 February 2002

Following is a statement made today by Mary Robinson, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, on constitutional developments in Bahrain:

"I welcome the constitutional developments announced on 14 February 2002 and the decision to hold municipal and parliamentary elections in the course of the year. The announcement made by the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, comes on the anniversary of the decision to establish an elected legislature and a constitutional monarchy. I trust that these significant developments confirm the path chosen by the Kingdom of Bahrain towards the democratic process that was endorsed overwhelmingly in the referendum held last year.

I look forward to meeting His Majesty the King of Bahrain during my visit to the country from 1 to 3 March 2002. I hope to learn more about these important developments in the democratic process and human rights, including the steps taken to advance women rights."
