SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE SALE OF CHILDREN, CHILD PROSTITUTION AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY TO VISIT MEXICO

The Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, Juan Miguel Petit, will carry an official visit to Mexico from 4 to 14 May 2007.

The Special Rapporteur is scheduled to visit Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez. During his visit, which comes at the invitation of the Government, Mr. Petit intends to meet government authorities, representatives of the judiciary, parliamentarians, and representatives of non-governmental organizations, UN officials and individuals dealing with issues related to the mandate. On completion of the mission, the Special Rapporteur will prepare a report to be presented at the Human Rights Council.
The mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography was established in 1990 and renewed most recently by resolution 2004/48. The mandate has since been assumed by the Human Rights Council. Mr. Petit, journalist and social scientist from Uruguay, was appointed Special Rapporteur in July 2001 by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Mr. Petit has carried out field visits in South Africa, France, Brazil, Paraguay, Romania, Albania, Greece and Ukraine. As Special Rapporteur, he is independent from any Government and serves in his individual capacity.
