Special Rapporteur on the right to food to visit Cuba

The Special Rapporteur on the right to food of the United Nations Human Rights Council made the following announcement today:

The Special Rapporteur on the right to food of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Jean Ziegler, will visit Cuba on a fact-finding mission from 28 October to 6 November 2007.

The purpose of the visit is to learn about the interesting initiatives undertaken in Cuba concerning the realization of the right to food and to gather information relevant to the protection and promotion of this right. The Special Rapporteur will examine existing national policies and programmes established to facilitate the availability of and access to food and water. He will also gather information on activities carried out by civil society organizations and the international community to complement the efforts of the Government for the realization of the right to food.

The Special Rapporteur will meet with relevant Government officials, members of the United Nations team in the country, and the diplomatic community, as well as with representatives of civil society.

The Special Rapporteur will submit a report on his findings, including a list of recommendations, at the seventh session of the Human Rights Council in March 2008.
