SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON HUMAN RIGHTS IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO TO VISIT COUNTRY IN FEBRUARY

27 January 1999

The Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Roberto Garreton, will be visiting that country from 16 to 23 February. This will be the Special Rapporteur's first mission to the Congo since the establishment of the Government led by President Laurent Desire Kabila in May 1997. Mr. Garreton had repeatedly sought to be allowed to visit the country following his field mission to eastern Congo in early 1997. His most recent request was dated 7 January 1999. The Government announced the decision to invite him to the Congo on 11 January.
