Statements Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS “HONOURED” BY EXTENSION OF MANDATE

01 June 2001

1 June 2001

The following statement was issued today by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson:

I am honoured by the decision of the United Nations Member States to extend my mandate as High Commissioner for a further year. I accept the decision with enthusiasm.

I appreciate the trust placed in me and am determined to live up to that trust. Defending human rights is a difficult and complex challenge, but I have no doubt about its significance and centrality to the work of the United Nations as a whole.

I would like to express my appreciation to the Secretary-General for his strong commitment to the cause of human rights and for his constant support.
