HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS CALLS ON
MYANMAR GOVERNMENT TO RESOLVE STANDOFF
WITH AUNG SAN SUU KYI

Following is a statement issued today by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson:

“I am deeply concerned about reports of the violation of the rights to freedom of movement and expression of respected human rights defender and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar.

Police stopped Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), on 24 August as she headed out of Yangon to meet NLD members south of the capital. The tires of her car were reportedly let out, and her way was blocked by two lorries. Despite her insistence to be allowed to attend the party meeting, the Government has reportedly refused to let her proceed.

She and a number of other NLD leaders who were travelling with her have been stranded on the roadside for nine days now.

I am following the situation closely, and am very concerned about the well-being of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD leaders and associates involved in the stand-off.

The denial of the freedom of movement and expression is the negation of some of the most fundamental human rights. I call on the Government of Myanmar to take the necessary steps to resolve the situation in line with international human rights standards.

I, like the Secretary-General of the United Nations, believe that the latest situation underlines the urgency of national reconciliation. I urge the two sides to engage, as soon as possible, in a substantive political dialogue, as called for by a series of resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and the Commission on Human Rights.”
