United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson has welcomed the peace agreement signed by Ethiopia and Eritrea in Algeria on 12 December 2000 and has congratulated all those who contributed to the resolution of the conflict.

She stressed that future relations between the two nations should be based on respect for human rights as an essential foundation for lasting peace.

She noted that the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) would include a human rights component which would operate on both sides of the border. "My Office is currently involved in the creation of this component and will provide substantive support for its work in the future", she said.

Mrs. Robinson added that her Office stands ready to assist the efforts of both Governments to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights in their respective countries.
