I welcome an agreement reached between the Government of Venezuela and the Unitary Platform of Venezuela, to create conditions for inclusive and credible elections in the second half of 2024, including commitments to guarantee the right to take part in the conduct of public affairs and fundamental freedoms.

I encourage its swift and full implementation, with the continued support of the international community. I welcome the release of people arbitrarily detained in the last few hours, and restate my call for the prompt and unconditional release of all those arbitrarily deprived of liberty. I also welcome the easing of unilateral sectoral sanctions, given their impact on people, and I call for them to be reviewed further in this regard.

I trust this agreement will act as a catalyst towards rebuilding trust and will help advance human rights in Venezuela. My Office remains available to accompany efforts to advance human rights in the country.
