The water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector is composed of various actors, ranging from aid organizations, private utilities, international funders and partner States to international and regional organizations. Among these actors, the role of international and regional organizations in promoting access to safe drinking water and sanitation is particularly critical in advancing human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation.

To better understand the roles and responsibilities of international and regional organizations in universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene services and facilities, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Mr. Pedro Arrojo, convened a series of bilateral meetings with international and regional organizations which specific mandate and programme to promote access to water, sanitation and hygiene. These bilateral meetings were organized between January and April 2021 as part of the Special Rapporteur’s initiative to consult various stakeholders after commencing his functions as the Special Rapporteur in November 2020.

The two-pager summaries introduce salient work of these organizations as well as the way forward for the Special Rapporteur to collaborate with those organizations during his tenure.
