Nigel Rodley, former Special Rapportuer on torture (1993-2001)

Nigel S. Rodley (United Kingdom, 1941-2017) was Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment from 1993 to 2001.

He served, for 15 years, as a member and vice-Chair of the UN Human Rights Committee, from 2001.

Professor Sir Nigel Rodley was an international human rights lawyer. He was a professor of law and Chair of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex. He has also served as the Dean of the University of Essex School of Law (1992-1995), and the Director of the LLM in International Human Rights Law.

He further lectured at Dalhousie University, the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research (New York), and the London School of Economics.

He founded and was the head of the legal office of the international secretariat of Amnesty International between 1972 and 1990.

Mr. Rodley was also sitting on the board of several organisations, such as Freedom from Torture, Penal Reform International, REDRESS, and Universal Rights Group. He was also the President of the International Commission of Jurists.
