UN expert on human rights situation in Burundi to visit Canada

16 October 2023

GENEVA (16 October 2023) - The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burundi, Fortuné Gaetan Zongo, will conduct an official visit to Canada from 16 to 20 October 2023.

“I am deeply concerned by the socio-political context, the shrinking of civic space and the absence of a reliable reconciliation process in Burundi,” Zongo said.

Since his appointment, the Special Rapporteur has requested the Government of Burundi to be given access to visit the country. Due to lack of response, the Special Rapporteur has decided to collect first-hand information from the Burundian diaspora and other stakeholders based in Canada.

Zongo will present his annual report on the situation of human rights in Burundi to the UN General Assembly on 25 October 2023.
