UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health visits Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK/GENEVA (21 May 2017) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, Dainius Pūras, will conduct an official visit to the Kyrgyz Republic from 22 to 31 May 2018.

During his 10-day visit, Mr. Pūras will be looking at the efforts undertaken in the country to realise the right to physical and mental health, including measures taken for its successful realization and obstacles faced. The Special Rapporteur is coming to Kyrgyzstan at the invitation of the Government.

“I look forward to engaging with Kyrgyz authorities, civil society and the international community to assess the enjoyment of the right to health, including availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of healthcare, as well as the underlying determinants of health,” he said. Mr. Pūras is interested in looking at factors that affect the right to health in the country, including poverty, discrimination, and social exclusion.

“I am particularly interested in issues related to access to primary healthcare; mental health; health in detention; sexual and reproductive health rights, and in assessing the situation of groups facing specific forms of vulnerability, including migrants, refugees and minorities, persons with disabilities, adolescents and prisoners,” added the expert.

The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to physical and mental health will share his preliminary observations on the visit with the media at a press conference on 31 May 2018 noon at the UN house, 160 Chui Avenue, Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. Please note that access to the press conference is strictly limited to journalists. 

Mr. Pūras will present a comprehensive report on his visit to the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2019.
