UN Human Rights Chief to visit Guatemala 17-18 November

GENEVA (13 November 2017) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein will visit Guatemala at the invitation of the Government from 17 to 18 November to discuss progress and challenges concerning human rights in the country.

Zeid will meet President Jimmy Morales Cabrera and the presidents of the Supreme Court of Justice and Constitutional Court, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Director of the Human Rights Commission of the Executive, the Ombudsman, the Attorney General, and the Head of the International Commission against Impunity (CICIG). 

The High Commissioner will also hold meetings with human rights defenders, victims, journalists, private sector representatives, diplomats, and colleagues from other UN agencies.

 On Saturday 18 November, the High Commissioner will travel to the city of Sololá to meet authorities and representatives, including women and youth leaders, of the Maya, Xinca and Garifuna peoples.
