People of African descent: Geneva meeting to address challenges in combating racial discrimination

GENEVA (22 November 2017) – Participants from Europe, Central Asia and North America will meet in Geneva from 23 to 24 November to address key issues, challenges, trends and priorities for the effective promotion and protection of the human rights of people of African descent.

The meeting, in Room XIX at the Palais des Nations, is part of the international decade for People of African Descent, which is being organised by the UN Human Rights Office and which is structured around the themes of recognition, justice and development. It will be opened at 10:00 on 23 November with a statement by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to reflect on the ways that governments in partnership with equality bodies, national human rights institutions, civil society, development agencies and regional organisations, can effectively implement the Programme of Activities for the International Decade, which runs until 2024.
