GENEVA (24 July 2017) – The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Andrew Gilmour, will visit Honduras from 25 to 27 July to engage with high-level Government officials and other stakeholders on the human rights situation in the country, paying particular attention to the protection of human rights defenders and indigenous peoples as well as the fight against impunity.

During his visit, Gilmour is also expected to meet with the National Human Rights Institution, human rights defenders, civil society representatives, the UN Country Team and the international community in Honduras.

This will be the second visit by an OHCHR senior official to Honduras since the agreement with the Government of Honduras to open a UN Human Rights Office in the country in May 2015. The Assistant Secretary-General’s visit will focus on enhancing cooperation with the Government of Honduras, and on strengthening the role of the UN Human Rights Office in Honduras.

In October 2016, Gilmour assumed the role as Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights and Head of the New York Human Rights Office. Gilmour was also designated by the Secretary-General as the senior official to lead efforts within the UN system to address intimidation and reprisals against those cooperating with the UN on human rights.
